It was a successful start to the 2011 season for the Wildcat lady golfers as they won their first three matches and finished in the top 10 in the two tournaments they have participated in so far.

The girls opened up the season with victories over Flint-Carman Ainsworth, Lapeer East and Macomb Lutheran.

Oxford defeated Macomb Lutheran 170-201 in their first match on August 18. Kyla Kurczewski shot a 41 to lead the Wildcats. Hannah Beebe shot a 47, Claire Wolanin had a 50 and Emily Cleland rounded out the scoring with a 53.

During their triangular match against Flint-Carman Ainsworth and Lapeer East, Oxford dominated again, this time winning by 17 shots over Lapeer East and 42 shots over Carman-Ainsworth.

Kurczeski again led the Wildcats with a 48. Cleland finished second in scoring with a 49, while Beebe shot a 52 and Wolanin finished with a 53.

They also finished ninth out of 24 teams at the Lapeer Tune-up and fourth out of 20 teams at the Oakland County tournament on Monday, August 29.

The Wildcats currently sit at 3-0 on the season.

Oxford takes on the rest of the Oakland Activities Association white division in their first tournament of the year at Huron Meadows on Wednesday, August 30.

“It should be very competitive,” varsity head coach Terry Kelley said. “The two teams that finished in front of us will also be in tomorrow’s tournament, and we need to step our game up.”

Kelley was referring to the combined schools of Farmington and North Farmington and Troy Athens. “We had a good match with them (Athens) last year, and we know they will be tough,” Kelley said.
