Rattlesnake bite

August 31, 2011

A massasauga rattlesnake, the only rattlesnake native to Michigan, bit a local dog in Bald Mountain State Park last week.

The 5-year-old English Setter, Dexter, was rushed to a local veterinarian who gave it antivenin. The dog is doing well in recovery.

The massasauga rattler is the only venomous snake in the state and can be found in woody areas throughout northern Oakland County, the DNR reports.
