Optimistsí support keeps beach open

June 20, 2012

Excited children throughout Clarkston made their way to Deer Lake Beach, June 8.

It was the School's Out celebration at the beach and, as a special treat, the Clarkston Area Optimists Club presented Ken Elwert, Independence Township Parks and Recreation director, a check for $50,000.

He noted the celebration wouldn't have happened without it as the donation helped with the $850 cost.

Plus, the donation would cover services and improvements to the beach.

The donation will fund free swim lessons, $2,928; volleyball court, $905; paddleboards, $2,900; dock and observation deck, $11,550; lifeguard hut expansion, $10,000; native planting and natural fence barrier, $10,000; signage, $2,000; and fencing along parking lot, $1,000.

The Clarkston Optimists Club received a $100,000 donation from an anonymous organization. They requested half of it go to Deer Lake Beach.

The beach, 350 White Lake Roadh, is open 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. every day until Aug. 17. It is $3 for resident and $6 for non-resident.
