FARMINGTON – The Oxford Wildcats’ efforts to move into first place in the Oakland Activities Association White Division fell inches short on Friday.

The Wildcats had a shot at beating Farmington in overtime, but couldn’t score and lost the 19-13 heartbreaker when a final pass missed its mark in the end zone.

Both Farmington and Oxford entered the game without a loss in league play.

Hard-hitting defenses controlled the first half for each team. Both teams committed several turnovers and their offenses were sluggish during the first 24 minutes.

The Wildcats registered the only touchdown in the half, a one-yard pass from Glacier Wallington to Kyle Anderson. The extra point was blocked and Oxford held a 6-0 lead at halftime.

The Falcons’ running game got some momentum in the third quarter and Farmington marched 79 yards on its opening drive for its first TD. The conversion failed and the game was tied at 6-6.

Farmington took the lead in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run and kicked the conversion to go ahead 13-6.

Oxford’s Mitchel Tilley then took the ensuing kickoff and followed some excellent blocking down the right sideline for an 86-yard kickoff return with 7:35 left. Josh Nelson’s conversion tied the game again at 13-13.

Farmington’s offensive and defensive lines were much larger than Oxford’s but the Wildcats’ tenacious defense stalled one Falcon drive after another. The Wildcat’s running game couldn’t make much headway against Farmington.

Oxford had only 10 first downs and 138 total yards in offense while Farmington had 275 yards of offense.

Oxford’s defense forced six fumbles and one interception. The Falcon’s lost three of the fumbles.

In overtime, Farmington scored on a four-yard run, but their extra point attempt was no good. Oxford then had its opportunity to win the game with a touchdown and extra point.

The Wildcats could not advance and after a failed option that lost four yards, Wallington was sacked for another loss of three yards. On a fourth-down from the 17, Wallington’s pass into the end zone was incomplete.

Liam Logan led Oxford with 53 yards on 16 carries. Zack Hadorn added another 40 yards rushing.

The Wildcats will host Rochester Adams on Friday at 7 p.m. Oxford is now 2-1 in the OAA White Division and 2-2 overall. Farmington improved to 4-0.
