Striving for states

Runners head to the MHSAA Cross Country Regional this Saturday to race for a spot in the state finals.

The teams finished with their last OAA Jamboree. The Lady Wolves finished second with 83 points, behind Seaholm, 33. The boys took sixth place with 125 and Lake Orion won the Jamboree with 56.

"The OAA meet was good," said Kevin Breen, coach for the Lady Wolves. "In preparation for the OAA we might have practiced really hard. We didn't see as many top performances from our team as we can expect going into regionals but the girls are ready. They have the experience to learn from."

Leading the Lady Wolves were Nicole Hanson in eighth place, 18:43, and Erin Billette took tenth, 19:15.

"Across the board we had solid performances," said Breen.

Sam Tanielian led the boys and finished in third place, 16:15 and Nick Moore took 12th place.

"We are really confident," Breen said as the team heads into the last races of the season. "As many good teams as there are at the regionals, at any given day those teams could step up and knock us out of the top spot and push us down to third."

He added the team has to watch out for Rochester Adams and Oxford. He explained both have been on their heels throughout the season.

"All Adams has to do is get their fifth runner faster," Breen continued. "They have two All-State runners up front that are tough to contend with on most days plus a solid middle. You never know what could happen."

The MHSAA Regional is at Goodells County Park in Algonac. The boys run at noon, and the girls run at 12:30 p.m.

"I am very excited about the end of the season," Breen added. "I am excited to see what kind of team we have developed over the year. Hopefully the cards will play out in our favor, and we will go to states."
