Powerhouse in Clarkston

January 09, 2013

Powerhouse Gym International is opening its newest location in the former Clarkston Gym next to Hamlin Pub at Sashabaw and Waldon roads.

“We’re very excited. We’ve been looking at Clarkston for a while,” said Phill Stublensky Jr., managing partner of Lake Orion Powerhouse and the new Clarkston Powerhouse Gym.

The transition has been a challenge – Powerhouse Gym did not buy the facility from Clarkston Gym, which went out of business. They are working with Independence Plaza’s management company to lease it.

Clarkston Gym’s closing means memberships, gift certificates, and other agreements are all void.

“Yet, as a good faith effort by the Powerhouse Gym’s corporate office and the new owners of the Powerhouse Gym Clarkston, we are honoring most written membership agreements under the previous Clarkston Gym,” Stublensky said.

Present a written agreement to verify current membership. Agreements will be reviewed on an individual basis.

“We have to make sure they are within corporate standards,” said Glen Bailey, president and owner of Powerhouse Gym. “Our goal is to be in business for a long time – everybody’s been great so far.”

The facility requires extensive renovation, including replacement of broken mirrors, flooring, and equipment.

“There is significant damage – it’s unfortunate,” Bailey said. “The members are the ones who suffer. We wanted to start on Jan. 1 so there wouldn’t be a lot of down time. Now, there’s a lot of down time.”

Current Clarkston Gym members can use the Lake Orion Powerhouse Gym by presenting a copy of current membership agreements while the Clarkston gym is renovated. Clarkston Powerhouse will open as quickly as possible, hopefully by the first of February, he said.

The 13,000-square-foot facility will offer a full range of cardio, strength conditioning, cross training equipment, Sports Performance Training for high school and elite athletes, spinning, palates, small and large group training, boot camps, nutritional supplements, functional training, hormone replacement therapy, and other health and fitness programs.

Clarkston Powerhouse joins locations in Lake Orion, Standish, Washington Township, and Ionia. Members have access to all locations.

“In 2010, Lake Orion Powerhouse earned Hall of Fame recognition, its highest honor,” Stublensky said. “We’ll deliver the same service here.”

A Powerhouse Pre-Sale Center is located in the old Bank of America office between the gym and Dollar General.

“We will have staff available at posted hours on the door at this location during the change over and pre-sale for questions, membership sales and membership transfer paperwork,” Stublensky said.
