Twp. OKs 2014 budgets, tax rates

Good news for Oxford Township taxpayers – they won’t see an increase in their millage rates when they get their winter tax bills in December.

As it has since the 1990s, the board once again kept the township’s operating tax at 0.95 mill. That will help support the $2.077 million general fund budget the board approved last week for the 2014 fiscal year, which begins Jan. 1.

One mill is worth $1 for every $1,000 of a property’s taxable value.

Along with the general fund and operating tax, the township board approved all of the 2014 budgets and tax rates.

Officials set the fire/EMS operating and the Advanced Life Support (ALS) taxes at 1.5 mills and 1 mill, respectively. The fire/EMS budget was approved at $1.12 million, while the ALS budget was approved at $1.23 million.

The police budget, which funds the township’s contract with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, was approved at $2.3 million. It will be supported by total tax levy of 3.9152 mills.

Unlike all the other millages, the police tax is only paid by property owners living in the unincorporated areas of the township, meaning everyone outside of the village.

Officials approved levying a 0.8538-mill tax to support the park and recreation department’s $1.046 million budget and a combined 1.3982-mill tax to finance the public library’s $1.2 million budget.

The tax rate to continue paying off the fire/library debt was set at 1.65 mills.

The township board also approved a $130,200 budget for safety paths and a $281,503 building site fund, which is money set aside for eventually finishing and expanding the township hall at 300 Dunlap Rd.
