Last school polling place eliminated

December 11, 2013

Independence Township Board of Trustees voted, Nov. 19, to eliminate the last polling place in a school, Pine Knob Elementary.

“This is just that last step in eliminating all of the polling locations at all the elementary schools,” said Independence Township Clerk Barb Pallotta.

In 2012, the board moved four of five polls from schools to safeguard students and ensure adequate parking. Clarkston Community Schools has offered to let the township use the school administration building for elections.

They also reworked some precincts, Pallotta said.

“We had three other precincts that were split with Waterford and Clarkston Schools,” she said.

One of the precincts split with Waterford had only 17 voters, which caused confusion. Now, all 1,151 Waterford School District in the township are in a single precinct, she said.

The abolished Precinct 14 from Pine Knob Elementary, about 1,000 voters. They will be moved to existing precincts.

The Independence Township Elections Commission, which includes Pallotta as well as trustees Ron Ritchie and Andrea Schroeder, will also have to approve the boundary adjustment.
