Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal traffic crash in northern Oakland County.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., May 6, a vehicle driven by a 49-year-old Ortonville man traveling southbound on I-75 near East Holly Road in Springfield Township was struck by a tire that came off a pickup truck heading in the northbound lanes.

The Ortonville driver, Darrin Wendall Harris, was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other passengers in the vehicle and no other injuries reported.

Michigan State Police are still trying to determine why the tire came off the pickup truck. The pickup truck went for a short distance before leaving I-75 into a ditch and then into some trees along the roadway, said Brian Cole, spokesperson for the Michigan State Police.

“It’s a very bizarre accident on a very busy section of highway in northern Oakland County,” added Cole. “The state police are still investigating the accident.”

As of Thursday the crash investigation continued. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Michigan State Police at 810-732-1111.
